What is Homeopathy?

I am not a homeopath. I am just a layman. However, I read a lot about Health and Well-Being. As a layman I write below the gist of what I have learned and understood from books and from my father (who was a qualified Doctor) and from my friends who are Homeo Physicians.

"Homeopathy is a system of therapeutics founded by a German Sergeon, Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), in which diseases are treated by drugs which are capable of producing in healthy persons symptoms like those of the disease to be treated, the drug being administrated in minute doses!"

You can also find the meaning and definition of Homeopathy on following web sites:

  • Homeopathy is a system of medicine which is based on treating the individual with highly diluted substances given in mainly tablet form, which triggers the body’s natural system of healing. Based on their experience of their symptoms, a homeopath will match the most appropriate medicine to the patient. | http://www.homeopathy-soh.org/about-homeopathy/what-is-homeopathy/ |

  • Homeopathy is an effective system of healing which assists the natural tendency of the body to heal itself. It recognises that symptoms of ill health are expressions of disharmony within the whole person and that it is the patient who needs treatment not the disease. | http://www.homeopathy-soh.org/about-homeopathy/what-is-homeopathy/simply-explained.aspx |

  • Homeopathy, also known as homeopathic medicine, is a whole medical system that was developed in Germany more than 200 years ago and has been practiced in the United States since the early 19th century. Homeopathy is used for wellness and prevention and to treat many diseases and conditions. • Homeopathy is a system of medicine that is based on the Law of Similars. The truth of this law has been verified experimentally and clinically for the last 200 years. |  http://nationalcenterforhomeopathy.org/articles/view,35 |

  • Homeopathy began in the late 1700s, developed by a German doctor named Samuel Hahnemann. It was developed as an alternative to the then pre-scientific conventional medicine of the day such as bloodletting, and other practices designed to balance the body’s four “humours” which were thought to be: phlegm; blood; yellow bile; and black bile. | http://www.skeptics.org.uk/article.php?dir=articles&article=homeopathy.php |

  • Homeopathy is based on the idea that large doses of a substance cause a symptom, while very small doses of that same substance will cure it. Homeopathy was developed by an 18th century German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, who founded a system based on the ancient concept of "like cures like." Substances that cause a certain symptom in a person are given to the person to relieve those symptoms. | http://www.cancer.org/docroot/NWS/content/NWS_2_1x_What_is_Homeopathy_.asp |

  • Homeopathy is a natural approach to medicine that works without contraindications (interference with other medications you may be taking) or side effects to stimulate the body's curative responses so the body heals itself. | http://www.hylands.com/faq/faq.php |

  • Homeopathy (also spelled Homoeopathy or Homœopathy) is a form of alternative medicine, first proposed by German physician Samuel Hahnemann in 1796, that treats patients with heavily diluted preparations which are thought to cause effects similar to the symptoms presented. Homeopathic remedies are prepared by serial dilution with shaking by forceful striking, which homeopaths term "succussion," after each dilution under the assumption that this increases the effect of the treatment. Homeopaths call this process "potentization". Dilution often continues until none of the original substance remains.[1]  | http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homeopathy |
